Originally designed to mimic the popular Japanese Garden Knife, hori hori roughly translates to “dig dig”. This hearty, multi-purpose tool is built for versatility. Pound in tent stakes with the flat pommel base. Measure planting depth with the handy inch marks. Saw a branch or whittle kindling with the rust-resistant doubled edge. Made for use in the backyard, camping, bush-crafting, or anywhere you need it.

Smooth and durable walnut handle seamlessly fits with the heat-tempered 6 ¾" pointed blade for a tool that just feels good in your hand. Added twine cutter doubles as a bottle opener, so you can enjoy a refreshing beverage of your choice after a hard day’s work.

The ultimate shield for the ultimate tool, the Hori Hori Sheath unites utility and design. Made of 900D polyester with an interior liner, it weathers real-world use while protecting the blade from dulling. Stainless steel belt clip supports easy carrying and accessibility, while the strong handle strap restricts the blade from slipping or moving. Open-end allows for easy cleaning and prevents soil buildup, preserving the blade for years of continued use. Accented with full-grain leather and copper to complement the rest of our Woodsman Collection.

Blade:
Apply a thin coat of protective oil after each use. Wipe clean of dirt, water, and fingerprints regularly. Use a medium to fine file to straighten out any larger dings or nicks in the blade. The edge can be honed with a medium sharpening disk or stone.

Sheath:
Waxed canvas should never be dry cleaned or machine washed. It can be cleaned carefully by hand. Brush off the loose dirt, rinse the surface with cold water, gently scrub with a brush, then let air dry. If stains persist, use mild bar soap or saddle soap.

After cleaning, waxed canvas may need to be re-waxed. To do so, use a wax conditioner and apply following the manufacturer's instructions.

Q: Why 900D Polyester?
A: 900D Polyester is water-resistant, resistant to bacteria, and very durable which makes it ideal for extended use in the outdoors.

Q: Can I store my Hori Hori outside for extended periods of time?
A: The Hori Hori is not meant to be stored outside for long periods of time. Extended exposure to wet conditions may cause rust and unnecessary wear and tear. We recommend storing your garden tools indoors after use to help them last as long as possible and to avoid the need to purchase a replacement.

Q: Where are Barebones garden products made?
A: Our garden products are designed in Salt Lake City, Utah, and manufactured by trusted facilities in China who meet Business Social Compliance (BSCI) or who are working towards their compliance with our support and guidance.

Q: How do I sharpen my Hori Hori?
A: The Hori Hori has two different blades - Straight and serrated. The straight blade edge can be honed using a typical sharpening stone. If blade is too dull for honing, you can reset the bevel using a standard mill file. (See Barebones File & Stone Sharpening Kit.) For serrated side, use a 13/64" round file or diamond stone to revive each section of the blade.

The Materials

Dense, smooth walnut. Heat-treated 4CR13 stainless steel. These two durable materials come together to create one of our most beloved and celebrated tools. Known for its density and fine, straight grain, walnut gives the Hori Hori handle a high-end feel without being too heavy. 4CR13 stainless steel exhibits good polishing and resharpening properties and excellent resistance to corrosion, both crucial qualities for a hard-worked woodsman tool.

The Inspiration

After studying and experimenting with garden tools from countless different countries, cultures, and climates, we discovered the Hori Hori. First implemented in Japan, the Hori Hori was originally used for careful and methodical excavating of plants, such as Sansai, in high elevation mountains. Translated from Japanese, Hori Hori means "dig dig", a perfect nod to the original and most common use.

The Design

We took the iconic Hori Hori and elevated it to a woodsman-style tool. The Hori Hori Ultimate is a hearty multi-purpose tool to use in your backyard, camping, bush-crafting, or anywhere you need it. Pound in tent stakes with the flat pommel base. Measure planting depth with the handy inch marks. Saw a branch or whittle kindling with the rust-resistant, double-edged blade. Use the twine cutter & bottle opener to crack open a fresh one at the end of the day.

This version has the option of a durable sheath made of waxed canvas and reinforced lining. Clip it to your belt for easy access on any adventure.

    Hori Hori Ultimate

I learned about hori hori knifes from a friend who works in landscaping- he said they were a gamechanger for him in his work. I first purchased one and then another from local hardware shop. These were name-brand but were not even close to sufficent for the challenge - I broke them both in short order. Then I found this Barebones version of a hori hori knife and it has been a dream come true. Extremely strong and up to every challenge I've encountered. Dandelions, tree saplings, deep root thistle's in clay soil - no problem. I love this tool. Bought 4 more to gift this Christmas. Highly recommend!

    My favorite weeding tool

I bought one of these six years ago and wore it down to uselessness. I contacted Barebones to ask how to sharpen it, the deep serrations being intimidating and requiring tools and techniques I didn’t have, and after being rejected by professional sharpening services. No complaint about the tool or company; this steel is HARD, and every bit of wear was hard-won. Customer service kindly give me instructions for sharpening (13/64 round file, firm hold of blade in a vice), but they convinced me it would still be a hassle. I found a new one on EBay for a decent price and snapped it up. Then I heard from Barebones again and they decided to send me a new Hori Hori, which I gave to my husband. Excellent product and company and I really would be surprised if someone could wear this tool out in five years.

Thanks Alice! Hori Hori's can be sharpened but we're sorry you couldn't find anyone local who could help. Hopefully you'll get twice as much done with your extra Hori Hori!

Best Garden Tool & Customer Service Ever

LISTEN: I love this tool. As I garden, it comes in and out of it's sheath constantly. Frankly, I've been brutal with it - I plant a lot of plugs and I'm constantly jabbing into the earth, cracking into stone, using it for leverage to push out rocks... totally careless. After 2 years of violence, the blade cracked! It's a super tough tool but I knew it would happen, I was way harsher than I should have been. So I called barebones to see if I could buy a new blade. They don't sell them separately. But they offered to replace the whole tool. I told them it wasn't their fault, I can buy a new one. But they insisted and mailed me a replacement for free! Without a receipt because it had been a gift. 2 years after purchase! Incredible service. I also ordered and paid for a second one because honestly I know I'm going to treat it harshly and I can't bear to be without one if I bust it. FANTASTIC TOOL.

    Thank you Barebones!
